Eau de Parfum vs Eau de Toilette: What the Concentration Really Means

If you have ever wondered why two bottles of the same perfume can smell different or last different lengths of time, the answer is usually concentration. Terms like eau de parfum and eau de toilette tell you how much fragrance oil is in the bottle — and that affects how strong a scent is and how long it lasts. Here is a plain-English breakdown.

What the terms actually mean

Perfume is fragrance oil diluted in alcohol. The more oil, the stronger and longer-lasting the scent. From lightest to strongest, the common types are: Eau de Cologne (EDC), Eau de Toilette (EDT), Eau de Parfum (EDP), and Parfum or Extrait (the most concentrated).

Eau de Toilette (EDT)

EDT has a lower oil concentration — typically lighter and fresher, with a noticeable burst up front that settles within a few hours. It is pleasant and easy to wear, but in Sri Lanka’s heat an EDT can fade faster than you would like. Great for daytime if you do not mind reapplying.

Eau de Parfum (EDP)

EDP carries more oil, so it is richer, projects better and lasts considerably longer — often most of the day. For our climate, EDP is usually the better-value choice: you get more performance per spray. Most of the popular Lattafa, Armaf and Rayhaan scents are EDPs.

Parfum and Extrait

The most concentrated form. These are intense and extremely long-lasting, so a little goes a long way — one or two dabs can last all day and into the evening. Worth it if longevity is your top priority.

Which should you buy?

For most people in Sri Lanka, an eau de parfum is the sweet spot — strong enough to last through the heat without being overwhelming. If you love a scent and want maximum staying power, look for the parfum or extrait version. If you prefer something light for the office, an EDT is fine; just expect to top up.
